Trajectory 6- Blue biotechnologies

Italy shows a singular delay in the use of marine biological resources for the development of blue biotechnologies of interest to the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, chemical, textile, environmental, energy and transformation processes industries. In the marine biotechnology sector, the most rapidly expanding fields are related to the development of automated biosensing technologies for in situ monitoring of environmental quality and risks to human health, biotechnological solutions for fueling containment and bioremediation strategies for the reclamation and recovery of polluted marine sites.Other marine biotechnological sectors in development are aimed at the discovery and production of new bioactive molecules for new drugs, the production of biomaterials from marine organisms, the sustainable aquaculture of micro- and macro-eukaryotes, the production of renewable energy from microalgae, and reuse of fishery waste materials to generate products with a high commercial value.
