Trajectory 2- Marine biotic resources

The Biotic Resources sector is a key growth engine for the Mediterranean Economy: Italy, for example, is the second fish producer of the Mediterranean and the fourth for aquaculture. The fishing sector suffers from a structural crisis due to the reduction of catches at a European level, notwithstanding the contraction in the number of vessels experienced during the last decades.Aquaculture production is increasing across the whole Mediterranean Basin, but a full sustainability of this practice is still to be reached.Innovation is needed, in order to make fisheries more efficient and aquaculture plants more environmental friendly.

The Biotic Resources trajectory is dedicated to innovation in fisheries and aquaculture. The major themes include ICT for food safety and monitoring of fishing activities, digital technologies for monitoring smart management of aquaculture plants, new sustainable feeds for aquaculture, multitrophic aquaculture, conversion of wastes form fisheries to a high-value product, integration of aquaculture plants into multi-use platforms.
